Palembang , March 2nd , 2015. The brutality murder to farmer of Lubuk Mandarsah, District Tebo, MR. Indra Pelani, who was carried out by 7 security guards of industrial timber company, PT. WKS, owned by Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) in Jambi on last Friday, February 27, 2015.
Desa Lubuk Mandarsah that was approximately established in 1975, identified to have lands conflict with WKS over about 1.570 ha of lands since the beginning of the WKS operation in about 2004. To date, this conflict remains unresolved.
Beating, abduction carried out by WKS’s security forces that caused a death of MR. Indra cannot be separated from the tensions between communities and companies, which resulted both parties to easily burned emotions, and lead to violence.
Wahana Bumi Hijau (WBH) condemns any violence and sadistic approaches in conflict resolution. We are expressing our deep sorrow over the death of Comrade Indra and standing with family, friends and colleagues, fellow farmers on this difficult time.
This tragedy has also strengthened our belief that APP that just celebrated 2nd anniversary of implementation of the Forest Conservation Policy on the 5th of February, not seriously or has failed to implement the commitment and social responsibility.
We are hereby urging APP to take comprehensive action to solve the entire social conflict, not only concerning to Lubuk Mandarsah, but also the overall conflict in their concessions and suppliers, which is in our record there are about 300s of conflict.
Related to this tragic event, APP must quickly take action to do, fair and independent, and transparent investigation, with the involvement of NGOs, government, authority and Komnas HAM.
APP also must immediately conduct a thorough investigation and evaluation of the security procedures and security services of a third party to make sure something like this does not happen again in the future.
